BURNING: Open a window for the flow of energy. Holding the smudge stick by one end, use a lighter to ignite the tip. Blow out any open flames so that the leaves slowly smolder. Next, wave the smudging wand around to direct the fragrant, cleansing smoke as you pray for peace, positive energy and the removal of all despair and negativity. Catch the ashes in a heat-resistant dish. After about 5 minutes, close the window/s. We have smudge jars available in our store. An abalone shell is traditional, but you can use a smudge pot, incense burner, or even a regular ceramic plate. Smudge sticks can also be extinguished in a dish of sand and may be re-used many times. Of course, never leave burning smudges unattended and make sure it is fully extinguished. If having trouble smoldering, place in open sunny room a couple of days or even 30 mins in warm oven to remove moisture from bundle. Also, do not store in plastic or closed containers. Store in simple cardboard or open earthen dish or shell.
